Supersizing the Mind and the case that your notebook is part of you

I picked this up expecting a pop-science gloss on extended cognition and got something closer to a real philosophical argument, dense, careful, occasionally exhausting. Clark’s whole project here is knocking down what he calls the brainbound view, the assumption that cognition happens entirely inside the skull and everything else is just input and output, and replacing it with the case that some of your actual thinking gets offloaded into the world, a notebook, a slide rule, the arrangement of tiles when you’re playing Scrabble.

I’m not a scholar and I felt that gap on some pages, this is genuinely difficult reading if philosophy of mind isn’t already familiar territory, and I found myself rereading paragraphs to make sure I hadn’t lost the thread of an argument that had quietly built three floors on top of a premise from two chapters back. One review that stuck with me came from someone who works in tech design and said they reference this text constantly on the job, which tracks, because once you accept the extended mind thesis it becomes an actual design principle, not a philosophy exercise, you start asking what cognitive work a tool is doing for a user rather than just what information it’s displaying.

Where this connects for me, oddly, is board games. Clark’s arguing that the physical board, the player mat, the tokens in front of you aren’t just a record of a mental state, they’re doing some of the computing, and I think about that every time I set up a heavy euro game and realize half my strategy is happening in the arrangement of my resources on the table, not purely in my head. I hadn’t expected a cognitive science book to change how I think about game design, but it did a little.

I won’t pretend I absorbed every argument on one pass, some of the middle chapters on representation and computation got away from me. But as a book that permanently altered how I think about the boundary between mind and tool, worth the slog.
